TEXAS GERMAN SOCIETY Organized September, 1983
ATTENTION: HIGH SCHOOL GERMAN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS
FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2012-2013
The Texas German Society (TGS) is
offering an annual essay contest to high school junior or senior students
interested in German language and culture.
One to three scholarships will be
awarded for qualifying essays. The first place scholarship is $1,000.00, the second
place scholarship is $750.00, and the third place scholarship is $500.00. The presentation
of these scholarships will be made at the annual Texas German Society Convention held
in March or April.
REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant must be a United States citizen and a
resident of Texas.
Applicant must be presently
enrolled in a German language course or have taken a German language course in
high school.
Applicant must submit an essay of
500 words (two pages double spaced) on the topic: My Present and Continued
Interest in the German Language and Culture. Applicant must have German language
instructor sign the bottom of the essay. On a separate sheet of paper, applicant
must include full name, social security number, complete home address, phone
number, email address, name of German language instructor, and name and address of school. On this
same sheet, we require that you briefly demonstrate your ability to write in the
German language by writing a thirty to fifty word profile of yourself.
JUDGING CRITERIA AND SCHOLARSHIP MONEY
The essays will be judged
on meaningful, specific, and organized content with focus and depth of development that is distinctive
due to originality and effectiveness of expression. Judges will also consider correct and effective
grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
The
scholarship money will be paid directly to the college or university when the
winners enroll in the college or university of his/her choice even if the winner
is receiving another scholarship. Scholarship money will be used for tuition
fees only. If the winner does not enter a college or university by the third
year from the date of graduation from high school, the scholarship will be
forfeited. Previous essay winners are not eligible to participate a second time.
