The Texas German Society (TGS) is offering an annual essay contest to high school junior or senior students interested in German language and culture.

One to three scholarships will be awarded for qualifying essays. The first place scholarship is $1,000.00, the second place scholarship is $750.00, and the third place scholarship is $500.00. The presentation of these scholarships will be made at the annual Texas German Society Convention held in March or April.

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be presently enrolled in a German language course or have taken a German language course in high school.

Applicants must submit an essay of 500 words (two pages double spaced) on the topic: My Present and Continued Interest in the German Language and Culture. Applicants must have their German language instructor sign the bottom of the essay. On a separate sheet of paper, applicants must include their full name, social security number, complete home address, phone number, name of German language instructor, name and address of high school. On this same sheet, applicants must briefly demonstrate their ability to write in the German language by writing a thirty to fifty word paragraph introducing themselves in German.

JUDGING CRITERIA AND SCHOLARSHIP MONEY

The essays will be judged on meaningful, specific, and organized content with focus and depth of development that is distinctive due to originality and effectiveness of expression. Judges will also consider correct and effective grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

The scholarship money will be paid directly to the college or university when the winners enroll in the college or university of his/her choice even if the winner is receiving another scholarship. Scholarship money will be used for tuition fees only. If the winner does not enter a college or university by the third year from the date of graduation from high school, the scholarship will be forfeited.
